CPD CHECKPOINT SUNDAY

The Claremont PD will be out tomorrow night conducting another DUI checkpoint beginning at 6pm.

DUI / License Checkpoint

Claremont, CA – On Sunday, January 23rd, 2011 the Claremont Police Department will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the City. The checkpoint will start at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 2:00 a.m. Drivers will be stopped long enough to ensure they are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Officers will also ensure that drivers are wearing their seatbelts and possess valid driver licenses. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If your New Year's resolutions included getting fit and losing weight, you might want to take advantage of the City's Generation Fit series of intergenerational walks:

Generation Fit Walking Program

The teens at the TRACKS Activity Center (TAC) will be challenging the Claremont adult community to a series of four walking excursions. "Generation Fit" will run four weeks on Tuesdays from January 25 through February 15, from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Both teens and adults will form a unified team in front of the Joslyn Center, 660 North Mountain Avenue, and walk a series of planned routes through the Claremont community to raise heartbeats, health awareness, and increase intergenerational socialization. Walking routes will average 1-2 miles each day. For more information, please call (909) 399-5488.

I CAN HAZMAT?

And if you've been stockpiling old batteries, cans of oil or paint, TVs or computer monitors, you can off load that stuff in two weeks when the City and the County of Los Angeles hold their next local hazardous waste roundup:

Household Hazardous Waste Roundup

Claremont and other Los Angeles County residents can dispose of household hazardous waste including unused pharmaceuticals, antifreeze, car batteries, used motor oil, paint, pesticides, and universal waste including household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and electronic waste (e-waste) such as TVs and monitors, computers, VCRs, stereos, and cell phones at the next free Countywide Household Hazardous Waste Roundup. It will be held in Claremont at the Claremont Corporate Yard, 1616 Monte Vista Avenue, on Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents can bring up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of household hazardous waste per vehicle to the Roundup.

Around Town Today

Here's a quick reminder of the Cheese Cave's grand opening today from 12pm to 4pm. If you haven't already been there, you'll want to check out their wares. The owners and the help are friendly and very helpful. And they're remarkably patient with those unschooled of us whose idea of good cheese comes in a spray can.

The Cheese Cave is located at 325 Yale Ave. in the Claremont Village, directly across from Walter's Restaurant.

Also, don't forget that the City's annual e-waste collection event is going on in South Claremont near the Claremont Auto Center. Take your batteries, circuit boards, monitors, computers, DVD/CD and VCR players, cell phones, and such over to 436 Auto Center Dr., west of Indian Hill and south of the 10 Fwy.

A side note: You will probably want to make sure your cell phone information is all cleared and that your hard drives are formatted to erase any personal records. It never hurts to be safe.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT FAMILY FESTIVAL (LITE) RETURNS

The summer Claremont Family Festival has returned to the Claremont Village Expansion, albeit in a truncated form. The festival goes from 5pm to 9pm every Wednesday through the end of August in the Claremont Village Expansion.

If you were around last summer, you'll remember that the festival originally had a market area and kid's play area along First St. in front of the Claremont Packing House, a crafts area and very small petting zoo on Oberlin Ave., and a food section on Second St. between Oberlin and Indian Hill Blvd.

When it first opened, the crowds were good. That original large turnout must have been mostly due to the curiosity factor because, by the end of summer, the First St. section was gone, and there were markedly fewer people walking about. This year the Oberlin section has apparently been eliminated, too.

There's still music, though. The festival's website says that tonight David Correa and Cascada, a group that plays "nouveau flamenco and world fusion," will provide the entertainment.

HALF-PRICE WINE AT THE PRESS

The Press Restaurant has bottles of wine for half-price every Wednesday beginning at 11am. So, if you're looking to get yourself half-witted, come on over to the Press for a bottle or three. The Press is located at 129 Harvard Ave. in the Claremont Village.

The Press has happy hour on weekdays from 3pm to 6pm, and until 1am on Thursdays. They also have live entertainment. Here's what's on tap for this week:

ELECTRONICA DUMP

Shed your unwanted electronic goods on July 24 from 9am to 3pm. The City of Claremont has arranged to for a free e-waste dump at the Claremont Center at 425 Auto Center Drive, off Indian Hill Blvd. and just south of the 10 Freeway.

The City's website says:

The City of Claremont has partnered with RVM Management and Global E-Recyclers in an effort to collect electronic waste by offering a Free E-Waste Collection Event on Saturday, July 24, 2010 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Claremont Center located at 436 Auto Center Drive. The event is open to the general public and businesses. Please see the attached flyer for a list of acceptable items. Any questions should be directed to Global E-Recyclers at (562) 321-9310.
