This Weekend in Claremont

BEER FEST II

If you thought Claremont would spend the weekend drying out from Wednesday's downpour, think again.  The Claremont Beer Fest returns to town for its second go-round tomorrow, October 8, from 12:30pm to 5:00pm in the Claremont Village. The CBF website has all the details:

Claremont, CA - October 8, 2011

The California Beer Festival (CBF) is coming back to the city of Claremont! With over 60 craft brews on tap, four live bands, and mouth watering food. CBF will be the event of the year for any beer enthusiast! CBF's main goal is to shine a light on the craft beer movement and celebrate great beer!

Proceeds will benefit
, a non-profit organization that provides financial support to student athletes to assist in their pursuit of both scholastic and athletic success in the city Claremont.

Tickets are $40 for general admission or $25 for designated drivers.

As you can see, the money goes to a good cause.   And nothing says "athletics" like an ice cold brew.  Apropos of which, where are the donuts?  We're missing out on the chance to have the first beer and donut fest, a Beer-athlon.

In the meantime, you can get your tickets for this year's beer fest at:

Also, don't forget that CCC's 5 Second Film Festival is set for April 28. CCC's mission statement, which we've posted below, may preclude certain humor-impaired Claremonters from attending (you know who you are):
Our Mission Statement
  • To acquire and disseminate knowledge in a humorous way.
  • To recruit like minded people to spread the word that learning can be fun.
  • To remember to laugh at our failings before somebody else does.
  • To keep an open mind on suggestions even if they sound silly - which most are.
  • To recruit more Deans than students for obvious reasons.
  • To reserve the right to refuse entry to the College to anyone who takes our mission too seriously.

RAVELERS, HERE AND ON THE ROAD

The Ravelers, Claremont's classic rock band, are on the move. Tonight, they're at the Padua Hills Theatre for Claremont Community Foundation fundraiser (from The Ravelers' PR dept.):
Hey Now...

The Ravelers are proud to be asked to be involved in several fundraisers this year, providing fun music for great causes.

This one is special for us because we call Claremont our home, and we have been looking forward to playing in the newly renovated and historic Padua Theater! We have peaked through the door and walked in the old theater every time we played a wedding reception or event over the past 24 years...hoping someday it would be remodeled to provide a nice place for entertainment and gathering. That day has arrived!

The Claremont Community Foundation was established in 1989 to serve the longer-term philanthropic needs of the community. The Foundation has awarded grants to more than 60 programs and special projects, enriching the lives of youth and adults throughout the community. Please join us to help continue these contributions...
Friday, March 25- Sock Hop at Padua Hills Theater!!!

Around Claremont and Beyond

CCF Gallery Show

The Claremont Community Foundation Gallery's featured artist for February is Ward McAfee. CCF is holding a reception tonight from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The CCF Gallery is located at 205 Yale Ave. in the Claremont Village (that's also the Claremont Chamber of Commerce office, if you were wondering).

For more information, call (909) 626-0222.

We were sorry we missed last month's artist, photographer Micki McAulay. There was a reception and lecture by McAulay on January 28. The event was hosted by Foothill Financial Advisors and the Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation, which provides aid to single mothers with children who are stricken by catastrophic illnesses. Realtor Laura Dandoy and Wine Styles also provided support for the event.

CAN YOU GIVE THEM A SECOND?

If you're looking for something to do tonight, head on down to the Claremont Village for the Friday Art Walk. Our friends at Claremont Community College, who sponsor the 5 Second Film Festival, sent us a reminder that they'll be represented at the Art Walk and that they also have an office in the Village Expansion.

The Third Annual 5 Second Festival is currently accepting submissions, if you're so inclined. The festival comes to town Thursday, April 28, at the Claremont 5 Laemmle Theatres. Claremont, home of the long-winded, including yours truly, is woefully lacking in brevity, so we'll take as much as we can get, if that makes any sense.

Here's the note from CCC:

DATE: Thu, February 3, 2011 10:31:27 AM
SUBJECT: Friday Night Artwalk
FROM: Claremont Community College
TO: Claremont Buzz

While in Claremont enjoying this Friday evening, please stop by our center to participate in fun (lots) and food (a little bit!)

We are participating in First Friday ArtWalk along with other happening venues. Stop by anytime starting at 5:30.

Come see the going-ons for the 5 Second Film Festival.

You know where we are. (Upstairs next to Chico's)

You can view all of the venues at www.artwalkclaremont.com.

Well now...Cindy is having her 50th birthday party at the Cambria Pines Lodge, and she is having The Ravelers play in the lounge. It just so happens that it is drummer Rob's b-day, too...so he gets to have his "birthday gig" in paradise! The Ravelers have played at the Cambria Pines Lodge a few times over the years, and we absolutely love the central coast of California this time of year.

We highly suggest getting a room with your love interest at one of the really romantic hotels nearby and joining us on Sunday for some fun. Monday is President's Day, so hopefully you can take advantage of a long weekend on the beautiful central coast of California.

The Voodoo Fix
A rock band that doesn't know their roots doesn't know anything. Evident in their name alone, The Voodoo Fix has taken hold and twisted their roots in the blues to become a true American Rock band of a new age, taking the scene by storm. After their second successful tour, these Los Angeles-based rockers are hitting their live shows harder than ever, leaving their college crowds thirsting for more.

Sunday, September 12, 2010, 10pm

Savage Republic

Rising from the Los Angeles underground of the 1980s, Savage Republic forged an astonishing reputation by virtue of five mesmerizing studio albums and a string of legendary live performances.

Forever shifting, their brand of ritualistically tribal exhibitions blurred the boundaries of postpunk, industrial and soundtrack music, incorporating minimalist bass rumbles, exotic metal percussion, primal chants, middle eastern melodies and even shards of surf guitar.

A "best of" 2-disc set entitled "Procession: An Aural History 1981-2010" has just been released.

Weekend in Pomona

The Daily Bulletin tells us that the Pomona PD will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 9pm tonight to 3pm Sunday morning, as well as a "city-wide saturation patrol." So watch your drinking and driving if you're passing through Pomona tonight.

Besides making for safer streets, these checkpoints must be a money maker for cities. They're underwritten by federal grants, and they generate revenue from the citations the police hand out.

* * * * *

If you're looking for a family activity this weekend, John Clifford at M-M-M-My Pomona writes that there will be a screening of the original "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (the one with Gene Wilder) at the Fox Theatre in downtown Pomona tomorrow at 2pm. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids under 12. Doors open at 1pm.

Also, Clifford says that they'll be a whole lotta shakin' going on at the Fox on September 25 when Jerry Lee Lewis comes to the Fox for a concert. Tickets start at $30, and you get all the info here.

Le Jazz Hot Saturday Night

If you and your sweetheart are lacking for Valentine's Day entertainment, come on down to the Claremont Folk Music Center this Saturday night, February 13, and hear Janet Klein and her Parlour Boys. Klein played the FMC about one year ago. We didn't make it, but our spies tell us it was a great concert.

Klein, who hails from somewhere around San Bernardino, has found a niche mining old songs from the first third of the 20th century and arranging them for her band. At first glance, Klein's act seems a little Betty Boopish, but after not too long, you realize that there's really quite a lot of artistry involved.

It would be very easy to veer into kitsch, but Klein clearly has a lot of respect for the material, and she does a good bit of scholarly work digging through old sheet music and film archives to unearth the gems she and her band perform. For a concert in Japan, Klein found some old film material and used it to work up a version of "My Blue Heaven" in Japanese:

The musicians, by the way, are first-rate. At last year's FMC concert, our sources say, German-born violinist Benny Bryndern (who looks a little like the Food Network's Alton Brown) and John Reynolds with his nickel-plated National Steel tricone guitar seemed to having a grand old time, creating a twangy, jazzy sound more than a little reminiscent of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with their Quinttett du Hot Club de France.

Klein's website has review from the Inland Empire Weekly's Chuck Mindenhall:

Throwback flapper Janet Klein is the very definition of an “old soul.” She grew up in 1970s San Bernardino, yet fell in love with the bits of the IE she never knew—the historical images she’d seen of early turn-of-the-century postcards with orange groves and the old Carnegie Library with the onion dome. The way things were got into her blood, and today she’s the most refreshing anachronism to ever materialize from the ether of the Prohibition. Klein is a channel to a definitive time in American music when Eton crops were the rage and batting-eyes meant you had a live one on your hands.

Thing is, LA-based Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys are more than some nostalgic shtick. She doesn’t merely perform songs from “lost America”—obscure numbers circa 1900s-1930s such as barrelhouse jazz, foxtrots, chansonettes, ragtime ditties and vaudeville from the Great Depression—she actually lives them, and transports her audiences along the way. Klein considers herself an “archeologist” for digging up buried treasures by the likes of Wilton Crawley and A.P. Randolf and Robert Cloud, the songs of the Victrola that her and the Parlor Boys—featuring an all-star line-up playing banjos, uprights, trombones, trumpets, violins, piano, etc—add all that authentic dang to feel the wild spirit of that bygone era. The “naughty” music of the day is Klein’s strong suit, and the ukulele chanteuse belts in an Olive Oyl-meets-Billie Holiday voice while coyly bobbling in step to the strump

The local band Hobo Jazz will open the show. Saturday's concert begins at 8pm. Tickets are $15 and can be had inside the FMC.

We really enjoyed the Fourth of July in Claremont. Here is a video clip that this young family posted to YouTube. We don't know them, we just happened to be searching YouTube for "Claremont 4th of July" and several came up with this one. It's cute how these two songs sorta go with what you are seeing...you parents will understand. The sound isn't all that great, but it is great to see a young family enjoying the music and a great community event...just click the link...

Hope to see you tomorrow evening near the 18th green!

Mata Barr and the LA Children's Chorus are fortunate that their Tonight Show booking went through. From what we hear, the new host barely made it out to Los Angeles from his old digs in New York City:
