Claremont Courier movie reviewer and retired University of La Verne professor Catherine Henley-Erickson gets a mention in David Allen's Daily Bulletin column.

Allen writes about the Henley-Erickson being named the city of La Verne's poet laureate:

California has two dozen poets laureate, most of them in the Bay Area, serving cities as large as San Francisco (population 824,525) and as small as Point Arena (population 493), according to the California Arts Council.

In Southern California, only Santa Barbara and the community of Sunland-Tujunga have designated poets. And now La Verne.

Henley-Erickson, who retired after 22 years as a composition and creative writing professor at the University of La Verne, doesn't intend to sit in an ivory tower and muse in isolation.

She likened the position to "an old-time minstrel" and said she's available to write "poetry on demand." She quickly added: "With a week's notice." She'd also like to mentor students interested in poetry.

Allen also blogged about Henley-Erickson. Although she hasn't written a review in terza rima, Henley-Erickson did mention that she one wrote a movie review in blank verse.

Allen's column also mentioned the Claremont Folk Festival. Allen says he didn't want to shell out the 50 bucks for a ticket, but since he lives nearby, he did walk over and stand by the gate on Yale Ave. to catch Jackson Browne singing "These Days."

The Courier's Landus Rigsby also covered the event, from the inside. The Courier also has an online slide show of photos from a number of local events over the past few weeks. The photos were taken by the Courier's Gabriel Fenoy.

We did get a couple emails from people questioning why the Folk Festival and the Taste of Claremont events were on the same day. We don't know. The Clarmeont Folk Music Center puts on the festival, and the local Rotary Club puts on the other. It's a shame to have to choose between one or the other.
