As we predicted, Pomona Mayor Norma Torres (pictured right, proudly displaying her efforts to clean up Pomona) won the Democratic primary election for California's 61st Assembly District seat.
Torres now turns her attention to the November general election, where she will face Republican Wendy Maier. The Daily Bulletin's Will Bigham blogged about Torres for the Bulletin:
"I'm looking at this campaign as I would any other campaign," Torres said. "I'm not taking anything for granted, and I'm going to take it very seriously."
Torres said that she will not be running for re-election in November for the mayoral seat in Pomona. She added that she was going to wait to see who was running before endorsing any mayoral candidate.
We suspect that Torres, the best local politician for the money (Norma's all for the money), has a pretty good idea who she wants to replace her as mayor. Torres' main concern is to build power base by backfilling with someone loyal to her. She wanted to do a similar thing when she endorsed Three Valleys Municipal Water District boardmember Xavier Alvarez for his water board seat.
Torres needs that strong base to solidify her position within her party so that the lobbying money keeps flowing. Word is, lobbyists are increasingly unhappy with what they're getting for their dollars:
