CUSD Mailbag

We received a note yesterday from a reader who'd heard of some serious cuts being proposed at last night's special meeting of the Claremont Unified School District's Board of Education:

DATE: Wednesday, June 10, 2009 11:25 AM
SUBJECT: CUSD
TO: Claremont Buzz

Buzz,

I just heard from a CHS counselor that there will be a recommendation tonight at the CUSD Board meeting to eliminate all counseling positions and replace them with classified personnel. That will be like handing a 15-1/2 year old kid with a drivers permit the keys to a tour bus and sending him across the country with a load of tourists. Would you want to be on that bus? Would you want your kids being guided through the web of college preparation by someone who a week ago might have been a cafeteria worker? That is just my knee-jerk reaction to what I just heard, so any further information you can glean from your web of contacts would be helpful. As it seems with everything in Claremont, timing is everything. The board meeting is tonight, and tomorrow is the CHS counselor's last day of work for the summer. That doesn't leave much time for discourse, does it?

The CUSD board did have a special meeting last night to discuss the district's budget, but the agenda material posted online doesn't make it clear if the elimination of counselors was on the table.
