OLA Fiesta 2009

May means other things to Claremont besides college commencements. It's also time for the 62nd annual Our Lady of Assumption Fiesta. This year's fiesta theme is "California Dream'n" and it takes place this coming weekend, beginning Friday evening at 5pm.

OLA has a flyer posted online with all the details, including a little history about the celebration:

62 years of Fiesta fun!

Our Fiesta has always been the pride and joy of the OLA community, and rightly so. It’s the perfect combination of multi-cultural and multigenerational celebration, family values, community participation, quality entertainment, and just plain fun! It’s thrilling to know that it has always been like this. The Fiesta has roots in a history much older than its 62 years. The original Catholic community in Claremont sponsored homegrown celebrations called jamaicas in the 1930’s and 1940’s with music, dancing, games, and great food. In 1947, the same year Our Lady of the Assumption Parish was formally organized, the first “Fiesta” took this successful formula and combined it with the raffle of a Plymouth sedan. Both Spanish-and English-speaking parishioners enjoyed great food, music, dancing, games, and carnival rides on a site on Foothill Blvd. In a tradition that continues to this day, the first Fiestas brought people together to celebrate life and enjoy the best of our diverse cultures.

There's lots to do - music, food, game booths, rides for the kids - so get make a visit to the fiesta if you're looking for something to do this coming weekend.
